FAME Recording Studios Featured In Music Connection Magazine Interview With Rodney Hall

FAME co-owner and president, Rodney Hall, recently sat down with Music Connection magazine to discuss the deep legacy and ongoing evolution of FAME Recording Studios. Today, Rodney operates our legendary Muscle Shoals space as a busy, daily working facility.

In the feature, Rodney discusses FAME’s dedication to the Muscle Shoals method of recording. We still believe in cutting tracks live on the studio floor, and the interview explores how pairing new artists with veteran session players keeps the raw energy of group performance at the center of our sessions.

The Music Connection article also outlines the unique equipment and acoustic properties of our two main recording spaces. Studio A pairs its historic room sound with a Neve 8232 console and a meticulously restored echo chamber that shaped countless classic hits. We recently partnered with producer Glenn Rosenstein to upgrade Studio B, modernizing the control room which features an SSL 6000E console, a rebuilt vintage Universal Audio sidecar, and a new Dolby Atmos setup.

Rodney also discussed a major financial initiative for recording artists: a state-supported incentive program developed with the Shoals Economic Development Authority offers musicians up to a 60 percent rebate on their project expenses. This program covers studio time, session musicians, travel, lodging, and meals. Launched in late 2025, the incentive is already attracting a wide variety of independent and major-label projects to our facility.

The piece concludes by detailing our growing ecosystem, noting the expansion of our publishing and songwriting divisions alongside a robust tourism program.

Atlas Obscura Names FAME Recording Studios One of the World’s Most Remarkable Places

“Some hippie cat who’s been living in our parking lot.”

That was Rick Hall’s answer when Atlantic Records executives demanded to know who was playing lead guitar on the Wilson Pickett session they’d just heard. The guitarist was Duane Allman, who in 1968 had been camping outside FAME Studios waiting for someone to let him in. He’d eventually befriended Pickett and used a lunch break to convince the soul legend to record “Hey Jude.” The result was a recording that stopped people in their tracks — and launched a career. Allman landed a record deal shortly after, and the Allman Brothers Band held their founding auditions right here on Avalon Avenue.

FAME Studios in Atlas ObscuraThat story — one of hundreds like it — is exactly the kind of thing that caught the attention of Atlas Obscura. The widely read guide to the world’s most extraordinary places has spotlighted FAME Recording Studios in a new feature, tracing our story from a Florence drugstore to our place in the permanent record of American music. For a studio built on making history, it’s a recognition that feels earned. FAME — Florence Alabama Music Enterprises — was founded in 1959 above Florence’s City Drug Store, a modest beginning for what would become one of the most consequential addresses in recorded music. Rick Hall moved the operation to Muscle Shoals, first to a former tobacco warehouse on Wilson Dam Road, and eventually to our current home on Avalon Avenue. By 1961, Arthur Alexander’s “You Better Move On” was introducing the world to what would come to be called the Muscle Shoals Sound. Two years later, Jimmy Hughes recorded “Steal Away” here, and the momentum never stopped.

Atlas Obscura captures something important about what makes that sound so hard to explain: it’s not a formula. It’s a feeling — soul, R&B, country, gospel, and pop converging in a way that seemed to unlock something in whoever stepped up to the microphone. The Muscle Shoals Rhythm Section, known as the Swampers, were the architects of that feeling, playing on hundreds of recordings and becoming one of the most sought-after backing bands in the world without most listeners ever knowing their names.

Aretha Franklin came to FAME in early 1967 and later said that session was the turning point that made her the Queen of Soul. Otis Redding recorded here. So did Wilson Pickett, Etta James, Little Richard, Lou Rawls, Candi Staton, and Clarence Carter. The decades brought Alicia Keys, Jason Isbell, Demi Lovato, and the Drive-By Truckers through these doors. What draws artists across six decades and across every genre is harder to name than it is to hear: FAME has a sound, and more than that, it has a feeling.

Rick Hall, our founder, was named Producer of the Year by Billboard in 1971 and inducted into the Alabama Music Hall of Fame in 1985 as the “Father of Muscle Shoals Music.” His son Rodney and widow Linda carry that work forward today, and FAME is as active as it has ever been — a working studio, a historic landmark, and a living piece of American music.

FAME is listed on the National Register of Historic Places (2016) and the Alabama Register of Landmarks and Heritage (1997). That designation matters — but what matters more is that the studio is still running, still recording, and still capable of the kind of magic that made Duane Allman pitch a tent in our parking lot just to get inside.

Read the full Atlas Obscura feature at atlasobscura.com/places/fame-studios. Then come see it for yourself — tours run Monday through Friday at 9 a.m. and 4 p.m., and Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Plan your visit at famestudios.com/tour.

Muscle Shoals Music Group presents SkyDog: The Shoals Experience, Aug. 28-30, 2026

Exclusive event in Florence, Alabama, brings major artists, Shoals legends, and a weekend of music, food, film, and Southern culture

FLORENCE, Ala., April 27, 2026: SkyDog: The Shoals Experience, a new music-driven destination event, debuts Aug. 28-30, 2026, in Florence, Ala., one of America’s most storied recording communities. The premiere of SkyDog Shoals brings highly curated live music, food, film, and storytelling to the Renaissance Shoals Resort and Convention Center. More information and ticket bundles are available here. Additional programming details will be released publicly through official event channels throughout the summer, leading up to the Aug. 28-30, 2026 weekend.

SkyDog: The Shoals Experience

Artists currently on tap for SkyDog Shoals are Jackson Dean, Wet Willie featuring Jimmy Hall, Maggie Rose, The FAME Gang, Mike Farris, Gary Nichols, Spooner Oldham, Scott Sharrard of Little Feat, Peter Levin of the Gregg Allman Band, and Sons of Legion, along with a collective of legendary Muscle Shoals session players who helped create some of the biggest hits in history.

SkyDog, endearing nickname of the iconic Duane Allman, honors The Shoals as the Birthplace of Southern rock, and celebrates the popular genre as one of Southern culture’s most enduring music forms.

“This is the fruition of a dream I’ve talked about for a long time,” Rodney Hall, co-owner and president, FAME Publishing and FAME Studios, said. “I’ve always wanted to create something that shines a light on this region as the birthplace of Southern rock and as a place where music history still lives. My father, Rick Hall, was part of building that foundation, and Duane Allman earned the name SkyDog within that story. When Duane talked Wilson Pickett and Rick Hall into laying down those legendary tracks on ‘Hey Jude’ at FAME, it marked one of those moments that changed music. This event is about honoring that legacy and giving people an elevated way to experience The Shoals.”

“Gregg Allman once said, ‘There is no such thing as Southern rock; all rock is Southern,’” said Scott Sharrard, guitarist, vocalist and musical director for the SkyDog Shoals all-star sets. “This show is about honoring Gregg’s brother Duane and his pioneering musical soul and visionary spirit. I will be tirelessly curating a show to honor the Allman family’s signature rock-and-roll fusion of the Southern-born music that we all love. Performing this concert with the help and talent of my good friends from FAME studios in Muscle Shoals, Alabama, one of the true cradles of American roots music in all its forms, is an added bonus that will truly bring the music back home. We will have some very talented friends along for the ride as well, who embody the storytelling and musical adventure that is intrinsic to great rock and roll, soul, blues and all its tributaries for generations. I have no doubt that Gregg and Duane will be smiling down as we hit the note in The Shoals one more time.”

SkyDog Shoals is built around the wide, creative legacy of Muscle Shoals: the songs, players, studios, and cultural pull that made the region one of the most influential music centers in the country. Organizers describe the concept as a “cruise ship on land,” with the hotel, convention center, outdoor staging, and surrounding experiences designed to function as one immersive weekend.

“I’ve spent my career in hospitality, and I’m also an avid concert goer,” Larry Bowser, general manager of Renaissance Shoals Resort & Spa, said. “The best music weekends are about more than the set times. They’re about atmosphere, discovery, comfort, and the feeling that you’re somewhere with a real story. SkyDog Shoals is being shaped with that in mind. The Shoals already has the music, the history, and the soul. This is about bringing those elements together in a way people can fully step into.”

Beyond the music, SkyDog Shoals will feature regional food, books, film, storytelling, and other cultural programming across the property. VIP offerings will include experiences tied to the celebrated onsite Caution! Stones Ahead Rolling Stones Museum, and the weekend will close with a Sunday gospel brunch.

At a time when audiences are increasingly drawn to experiences with identity and a strong sense of place, SkyDog Shoals aims to offer a weekend that could only happen in Muscle Shoals.

Presented by Muscle Shoals Music Group, SkyDog Shoals is launched with the founding support of One Louder, and community partners Singing River Automotive and Visit The Shoals. Inquire about sponsorship and activations options here.

FAME Recording Studios Featured in Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum’s New ‘Muscle Shoals’ Exhibit

FAME Recording Studios Featured in Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum’s New ‘Muscle ShoalsLow Rhythm Rising’ Exhibit

MUSCLE SHOALS, Ala., Sept. 22, 2025 — FAME Recording Studios today announced it will be featured in the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum’s new exhibit, “Muscle Shoals: Low Rhythm Rising,” opening Nov. 14, 2025, in Nashville, Tenn. The exhibit examines the rise of the Muscle Shoals sound through recordings, artifacts and session history from FAME and other Shoals contributors. An opening-weekend schedule of events will accompany the debut, and the exhibit will be on view for nearly three years.

The “Muscle Shoals: Low Rhythm Rising” exhibit will feature key artifacts from FAME’s history, including the original piano played on Aretha Franklin’s breakthrough hits as well as other FAME hits through 1969 by legends Spooner Oldham, Barry Beckett and David Briggs. Also on display will be FAME founder and owner Rick Hall’s personal fiddle, documents, and equipment. Rather than retelling familiar Muscle Shoals narratives, the “Muscle Shoals” exhibit places FAME’s session materials, photographs, instruments and recordings within the region’s broader story. Together, they trace how work at FAME led to sales of hundreds of millions of records and shaped soul, R&B, country and rock far beyond the Shoals, bringing fresh visibility to a studio that rewired the American sound.

Because of that influence, the term “the Muscle Shoals sound” has become a cultural emblem synonymous with raw, soulful music that shaped American identity. Released in 2013, the documentary “Muscle Shoals” brought wider attention to the Shoals and sparked renewed interest in FAME as a cultural touchstone. Founded in 1959 by Rick Hall, FAME hosted sessions by Otis Redding, Etta James, Clarence Carter and Wilson Pickett, who recorded “Mustang Sally” and “Land of 1,000 Dances” at the studio in 1966. Those records helped define what became known as the Muscle Shoals sound.

“After more than six decades of sessions, FAME Recording Studios continues to surprise and move listeners with its sound, its soul and its vibe,” said Rodney Hall, president of FAME Recording Studios and son of founder Rick Hall. “Like all great studios, FAME has turned limitation into invention and hard knocks into songs that last. This exhibit lets visitors see the tapes, charts and instruments behind that work, and we are proud to share it with the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum.”

Opening weekend events celebrating the new exhibit, Nov. 14–16, 2025, will feature live performances by FAME alumni as well as a community panel at noon Saturday with the “First Lady of Muscle Shoals Music,” Linda Hall, and Candi Staton.

The Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum’s CMA Theater will present “Muscle Shoals: Opening Concert Celebration” on Friday, Nov. 14, at 7:30 p.m. CT. The program features performances by Tiera Kennedy, Bettye LaVette, Wendy Moten, Spooner Oldham, Dan Penn, Maggie Rose, Shenandoah and John Paul White. The house band, led by guitarist Will McFarlane, includes Mark Beckett, Mickey Buckins, Kelvin Holly, Clayton Ivey, the Shoals Sisters, Charles Rose and Bob Wray.

FAME Records Celebrates Shenandoah’s Chart Topping Return with “Two Dozen Roses” Featuring Luke Combs

FAME Records Celebrates Shenandoah’s Chart Topping Return with “Two Dozen Roses” Featuring Luke Combs

MUSCLE SHOALS, AL, November 6, 2024 — The storied walls of FAME Recording Studios have long echoed with the rich history of music, and this tradition continues with a new No. 1 hit. The GRAMMY®, ACM, and CMA-winning group Shenandoah have achieved their first No. 1 in three decades with the captivating rendition of “Two Dozen Roses,” featuring the reigning CMA Entertainer of the Year, Luke Combs. Released by FAME Records / 8 Track Entertainment, this dynamic collaboration has already surpassed one million streams, leading the iTunes All Genre and Country charts. Stream and download here: https://music.apple.com/us/album/two-dozen-roses/1704896186.

Shenandoah’s frontman Marty Raybon adds a contemporary spin to the classic while still delivering the signature sound that shaped ’80s and ’90s country music. Raybon’s passion blends seamlessly with Combs’ voice, creating a bridge between two eras of country greatness. As a testament to the song’s enduring appeal, Luke Combs has been treating his fans to this classic, originally released by Shenandoah in 1989 as the fourth single from their album “The Road Not Taken.” It became their third number-one hit in both the United States and Canada.

FAME Recording Studios takes immense pride in having been the studio where “Two Dozen Roses” was first recorded, and today, where its reimagined version was brought to life. FAME’s doors have long been a home to Shenandoah’s founding members, Marty Raybon and Mike McGuire. The GRAMMY® winning engineer, Noah Gordon, who oversaw the production of this historic track, chose to revisit the original ambiance of FAME, preserving and elevating its timeless essence.

“FAME Recording Studios isn’t just a place; it’s a living, breathing testament to music history. We’re honored to once again be the canvas upon which Shenandoah paints their musical legacy, and with the unparalleled expertise of Noah Gordon, ‘Two Dozen Roses’ has been reborn with the soul and spirit that only FAME can offer,” said Rodney Hall, Co-Owner and President of FAME Publishing/FAME Records/FAME Recording Studios. “From Marty Raybon to Mike McGuire, our legacy is intertwined with theirs, and this reimagined track further cements our shared journey in music.”

Billboard’s Jessica Nicholson aptly described the collaboration, stating, “As collaborations and interpolations of classic hits increase in the country music genre, an iconic ’90s country group and one of country music’s current biggest stars are teaming up to refresh a ’90s country classic.”

Following closely on the heels of Shenandoah’s acclaimed 2020 album, “Every Road,” which showcased a multitude of country stars, this new No. 1 further seals their legacy in country music. As FAME Recording Studios moves forward, we are committed to being the torchbearers of authentic music, continually weaving the past’s rich tapestry with the vibrant threads of the present.

FAME Recording Studios extends heartfelt congratulations to Shenandoah, Luke Combs, and all the creatives behind “Two Dozen Roses.” As we celebrate this No. 1, we are reminded that, at FAME, legacies are not just remembered; they are continually reborn.

FAME Recording Studios Teams with Royer Labs to Help Bonneville Capture the Authentic Muscle Shoals Sound on New Single “Undercover Woman”

FAME Recording Studios Teams with Royer Labs to Help Bonneville Capture the Authentic Muscle Shoals Sound on New Single “Undercover Woman”

Muscle Shoals, AL, October 4 2023 – In the quest to capture the unique essence of the Muscle Shoals sound, Bonneville, a Southern Retro Soul Band renowned for their soulful, funk-infused R&B, chose FAME Recording Studios for their upcoming single “Undercover Woman.” Slated for release on October 4th via Starita Records, this latest collaboration between FAME and Bonneville introduces cutting-edge microphone technology from Royer Labs, elevating the already iconic sonic quality associated with Muscle Shoals.

Rodney Hall, President of FAME Recording Studios, expressed his enthusiasm for the collaboration, stating, “It’s a privilege to collaborate with artists such as Bonneville, who truly understand that the authentic essence of the FAME sound can only be captured within these walls.”

“Undercover Woman” tells the story of a man longing for emotional closeness with a woman who is physically near but emotionally distant. The mood of the song shifts from a sense of longing to a celebration of love found. Lead vocalist Wes McGee describes the track as “definitely one of the more funky ‘bop your head’ tracks, something you’d want to listen to on a road trip to Vegas.” The song was conceived ‘on a whim’ during a session at FAME, according to band member Jeff Hayashi, who drew inspiration from non-standard open tuning popularized by Jimmy Page to create its unique musical texture.

To do justice to the emotional and musical complexity of the track, FAME employed the cutting-edge ribbon microphones from Royer Labs. GRAMMY®-recognized producer, Starita drew upon his long standing relationship with Royer Labs and FAME to spearhead this collaboration. “When he called us about an all-Royer recording of Bonneville at FAME Studios, we were all in,” says John Jennings, VP of Sales & Marketing at Royer Labs. Starita shares, “One thing I love about working with Bonneville is that they’re not afraid to access new tools to achieve their vision. For us to record this song with all ribbon microphones is not usually done. With that many ribbon mics live in a room, I would typically expect to have a mess given that ribbons pick up sound from the front and back of the mic.” FAME’s engineer, Wes Sheffield, also noted that the microphones were a game-changer in capturing the rich and authentic sound that Muscle Shoals is renowned for. “When we pulled up the faders, the sound was so natural and full-bodied; it was as if you were right there in the room with each instrument, experiencing the legendary atmosphere of FAME firsthand,” Sheffield said.

As FAME Recording Studios celebrates its 60th anniversary, its impact on the world of music is undeniable. Established in Florence, Alabama in 1959 and moved to Muscle Shoals in 1961, FAME has been a crucial part of the careers of iconic artists such as Aretha Franklin, Wilson Pickett, Alicia Keys, Jason Isbell, and Etta James. Over the years, FAME has also been involved in the recording and/or publishing of records that have sold more than 400 million copies globally.

The partnership with Royer Labs comes at a pivotal moment, adding another layer to FAME’s storied history and resonating perfectly with Bonneville’s adventurous spirit and respect for musical heritage. The collaboration also exemplifies Bonneville’s ongoing relationship with
Mississippi-born producer Starita, who is well-known for his genre-blending approach to music production.

The single “Undercover Woman” promises to be a milestone in capturing the essence of the Muscle Shoals sound, while also showcasing the artistic dynamism of Bonneville. The song will be available across all digital service providers on October 4th, 2023. For a complete list of Bonneville’s upcoming performances and other events, please visit bonnevilleofficial.com.
